Tips for Designing Car Lettering

Car lettering is a classic, no-frills form of car signage. For simple messages that don't need any background "noise," you can't go wrong with car lettering. So, one would think the car lettering design process is quick and easy. For the most part, you'd be right, but here are a few pointers to help ensure that your car sign serves its purpose.

  1. Size - There are two important factors to consider with lettering size: 1) the overall dimensions of your lettering piece, and 2) the size of the letters themselves. Depending on which sign company you choose, the price of your car lettering will reflect one of these factors. You'll need to measure the overall area you have to place lettering to make sure you order a piece that fits within those size limitations. You'll also want to decide what size your actual letters should be to ensure that your sign can be read easily. Every 1" in text height results in 10' of easy readability (so, this means that 3" tall text could easily be read from up to 30' away).
  2. Color - The color scheme of your car decal seriously affects its readability. Consider the color of the surface to which you will be applying the lettering, and then choose lettering that contrasts it as much as possible. Dark vehicles should have white lettering, and light vehicles should have black lettering. The eye tends to read windows as dark, even if they are not tinted, so stick with white window lettering for the best result. Colored lettering is available, as well, just make sure there's enough contrast.
  3. Font - The font you choose for your car sign should be bold, large, and simple. There are two reasons for this: 1) these kinds of fonts are much easier-to-read than highly-intricate script fonts, and 2) script fonts are generally too-detailed and intricate for a sign company's cutting machine to cut out of the vinyl film from which car lettering is made. As a safe bet, choose a font like Arial, Helvetica, or Impact to avoid these issues.
